Streetscape and close up of brick work

Streetscape projects stimulate growth on commercial corridors and foster job creation in their neighborhoods, which lead to improved quality of life for area residents.

After raising over $500,000 from public and private sources, United North completed major streetscape improvements on Lagrange Street in the heart of the business district. These improvements include upgraded sidewalks, brighter decorative lighting, historic mast-arm street signs, street furniture including benches and trash receptacles, landscaped parking areas with brick and wrought iron fences, and canopy street trees with wrought iron guards and grates. Many private property owners have since added wrought iron gates to complement the streetscape improvements.

In 2009 United North also completed a streetscape improvement project on Summit Street that includes historic decorative lighting, brick imprinted sidewalks, canopy street trees and tree grates, and street furniture including benches and planters. A unique feature of this project is a decorative asphalt design for the intersection of Summit and Lagrange Streets (see below).

Summit Street is one of the neighborhood's primary commercial corridors and serves as a main artery to downtown. The Summit Street Master Plan, adopted by the neighborhood in 2000 and into the City of Toledo’s 20/20 Plan in 2001, serves as the catalyst for development of the riverfront along Summit Street. A new zoning overlay district is helping to reverse infrastructure decay, enhance architectural uniqueness, and celebrate well-designed storefronts.
